アラスカその３ / Alaska Part 3 – Seward – Kenai Fjords National Park

その２（Denali National Park）からの続き

Denaliを出て一旦アンカレッジへ戻り、一泊してから港町のSewardにやってきた。ここでは、Kenaiを中心に海の野生動物やフィヨルドの氷河を見ることのできるツアーが出ている。今回、Major Marine Toursの7.5時間クルーズに参加した。

Seward harbor — Sewardは小さな港町で、漁船や観光船、クルーズ船など様々な船が停泊している。チェックインの推奨時刻に間に合うように到着したが、既に近くの駐車場のスペースはギリギリだった。

Scenic view of the fjords near Seward — 波の静かな湾内を抜け、外海を通ってキーナイ・フィヨルドへ向かう。長袖シャツに薄手のフリース、ダウンベスト、フード付きウインドブレーカーにニット帽まで固めて、ようやくずっと甲板に立っていられる程度に寒い。もちろん船内はそんなことはないが、自分だけは臨戦態勢なので大半の時間は外である。

Humpback Whale surfacing while feeding, with dramatic splashes of water in Kenai Fjords near Seward — ラッコを見てほとんど間をおかず、ザトウクジラ（Humpback Whale）が現れた。食事の時間らしく、豪快な浮上を見せる。

Black dorsal fin of an orca appearing above the ocean surface in Kenai Fjords near Seward — 外海に出てしばらく進むと、周囲に多数のシャチ（Orca）が現れた。四方八方に出現したせいで逆に狙いが絞りきれず、写真にはうまく収められなかった。

Back and small dorsal fin of a Fin Whale surfacing at sea in Kenai Fjords near Seward — 巨大な体に小さなヒレが印象的な、ナガスクジラ（Fin Whale）。シロナガスクジラに次いで2番目に大きなクジラ。ザトウクジラは写真以外にも複数観察できており、この海域の野生動物の密度に驚かされる。

Sea otter mother and pup floating on the ocean in Kenai Fjords near Seward — 再びラッコ。今度は子連れだ。ただ、写真では何がどうなっているのか分かりにくい。

Sea otters floating together on the ocean in Kenai Fjords near Seward — くつろぐラッコたち。シャチに襲われる危険はないのかと不思議に思うが、通常は小さなラッコはシャチの捕食対象ではないらしい。ただしこの広い海域で襲われれば、ほぼ逃げ切るのは不可能。そう考えると見かけほどお気楽な暮らしでもないかもしれない。

Glaucous-winged Gull and Short-billed Gull standing on drifting ice in Kenai Fjords near Seward — 大型で背中と尾羽の色が薄いワシカモメ（Glaucous-winged Gull）と、小型のアメリカカモメ（Short-billed Gull）。アメリカカモメは和名がこれで良いかやや自信なし。

Cracked glacier ice seen from the sea in Kenai Fjords near Seward — 氷河の氷が目の前で崩れる様子を見る事ができる。写真の氷も裂け目が入っているので、まもなく落ちそう。手前のツノメドリと比較すると大きさがよくわかる。

船と並走するイシイルカ（Dall’s Porpoise）。

Distant view of a Bald Eagle flying against green cliffs in Kenai Fjords near Seward — 最後は遠目ながら、成鳥のハクトウワシ（Bald Eagle）も観察することができた。

今回のツアーでは、船長も驚くほど立て続けに野生動物と出会うことができ、本当に恵まれた一日となった。外海の船酔いは辛い人にはなかなか厳しいが、敢えて甲板に出てジェットコースターのような気分を味わえば、きっと気も紛れる（かもしれない）。
