Elkhorn Sloughで自然観察（Monterey湾）その１

Santa Cruz〜Monterey間に位置するMoss Landingは、Monterey湾に注ぐ河口の湿地帯。ラッコをはじめ豊富な海生哺乳類と野鳥を観察できる。陸上からはあまり観察スポットがないので、ツアーボートに申し込むか、カヤックをレンタルしよう。

ツアーに対応しているのはElkhorn Slough Safariか、Monterey Bay Eco Toursの2社。私はElkhorn Slough Safariを利用したが、どちらもほぼ同じようなボートに見えたので、お好みで良い気がする。次はカヤックで観察したい。カヤックレンタルも2社ほどある。

Western Grebe swimming on the water at Elkhorn Slough in winter — Western Grebe（クビナガカイツブリ）。黒色部が目の下まで広がっていることと、嘴がやや上に反っているのが特徴。

Male Common Loon floating on the water at Elkhorn Slough in winter — アビ（Common Loon）をようやく見ることができた。こちらはオス。この姿も優美だが、夏羽を見てみたい。

Double-crested Cormorant flying directly toward the camera at Elkhorn Slough in winter — 河口にはウが多く集まっている。ミミヒメウ（Double-crested Cormorant）。

Sea otter surfacing from the water and showing its face at Elkhorn Slough in winter — 今回の一番のお目当てだったラッコ。ボートが出るとそこかしこにいるので、遭遇率100%。
