カヤックでラッコを見に行く – Elkhorn Slough その１

前の記事では観察ボートに乗ってElkhorn Sloughを探索したのだが、ここではカヤックレンタルも行われていて、穏やかな河口を気軽に見て回ることができる。ということで、早速再訪してカヤック遊びをしてみた。

Elkhorn Sloughの入口にあたるMoss Landingでは、2軒のレンタルカヤック業者が利用できる。今回、Monterey Bay Kayaksにてカヤックを借りる。予約不要で、当日朝に来てサクッと借りられるのは気楽で良い。機材を扱うので、オープンタイプの一人乗りを選択。ライフジャケットを借り、禁止区域など簡単な説明を受けて早速出発。

Paddling a kayak forward, winter, Elkhorn Slough — オールを漕ぐのは20年近く前のシーカヤック体験以来。万一に備えドライバッグ携行だが、撮影中はむき出しなので、転覆だけは絶対避けないといけない。

カヤックの操作にも少し慣れ、撮影開始。保護区内では野生動物に近づきすぎないように注意喚起される。概ね、カヤック縦5艘分は距離を開ける必要がある。しかし実際は風や潮流で流されるので調節は結構忙しい。

いつもの干潟の写真と違うのは、全て水側の低位置から撮影していること。これがちょっと違う視点の写真になっていて面白い。しかも陸から近づくよりも、カヤックで流されてくるのは鳥からあまり警戒されないことがわかった。

Pied-billed Grebe, winter, Elkhorn Slough — かなり小型のカイツブリ、オビハシカイブツリ（Pied-billed Grebe）。

Two Canada Geese standing side by side, winter, Elkhorn Slough — カナダガン（Canada Goose）は、やはり公園よりもこのような場所にいてほしい。
