Nature Watching at Elkhorn Slough (Monterey Bay) – Part 2

Continued from Part 1

After the sea lions, sea otters, and loons, more wildlife kept appearing. The density of sightings was quite high. On the boat, if you let them know you’d like to take photos, they may guide you to the rear seats where there’s more room to move around. They try to accommodate if space and other requests allow.

I’ve never seen such a dramatic fight between herons. That must hurt their necks.

Sea otters usually stay in calm water. Some individuals appear to be tagged on their feet for identification.

Brandt’s Cormorant. Since it’s the same composition as the Double-crested above, the differences are easy to see.

We saw many sea otters with pups. This was the fluffiest one of the day. Most otters were soaked to the head, so to stay this dry must take serious effort.
