鋸山 その1 / Nokogiri Mountain Part 1

From April 2024, I’ll be heading to America, and there’s only a short time left of my nine-month stay in the Kanto region. I don’t have many available days off. So, I thought about where to go.

Car enthusiasts might be familiar with a show called “Grand Tour” on Amazon Prime Video. It features former presenters from the popular British BBC show “Top Gear” embarking on outrageous car journeys. The destination for their Japan edition was Mount Nokogiri in Chiba Prefecture. At the time, I didn’t know the name, but it left a lasting impression on me, so I’ve always wanted to visit someday.

The entire mountain has become an industrial remains where stone has been quarried since ancient times, which is very intriguing. The name of the mountain “Nokogiri (鋸)” means “saw”. The photo is a panorama composed of multiple shots.
As for mountain climbing, while there are some steep stairs in parts, it’s easily climbable in about an hour. The view is also excellent.
There are traces of former quarries scattered throughout the area. Now covered with trees, they present a unique landscape.
I saw similar trees in the Aokigahara Forest Sea as well…
It’s a space that resembles the world of Laputa or the ruins of Southeast Asia.
