大磯のアオバト / Japanese Green Pigeons in Oiso

Due to the lack of familiarity with the land and indeed the heat, I was not able to move at all in August. It is still hot, but I would like to resume my activities.

When I came to the Kanto region, I really wanted to see the Japanese Green Pigeons in Oiso, Kanagawa Prefecture. The pigeons, which are usually hard to find even in the mountains, come down to this rocky area in groups from neighboring mountains in search of salt water. I am sure there are plenty of other places where they can drink seawater, but I don’t know why this place is so good. I considered the possibility of moving along the mountain, but there are plenty of places where the mountains close in to the sea.

Since I could not use a car, I would have to rely on public transportation. I arrived at the site on the first train, but there was already a huge line of cannons lined up and I was almost at the bottom of the line.

I was late in picking a spot. Nevertheless, the rocky area is spread out horizontally, so depending on where they land, there is enough opportunity to see the pigeons.

They come in groups one after another.

If you want to photograph flying, it is okay because it does not depend on the positioning.

The greenery is beautiful in the morning sun.

They gather one after another, aiming at the gap where the waves don’t come.

It escaped from the waves in the nick of time.

It was hectic as they appeared and took off one after another.

It glances at the waves, but persists without running away.

In the series of photos, it appears to be floating or popping out of nowhere after being swept away by the waves. They may be risking their lives.

This one, too, appears to have managed to pop out…

Caught in the wave

It doesn’t come up?

It is also hard to make up for the salt that is lacking in mountain living.

I was able to photograph enough green pigeons, which I had rarely encountered before.

Sometimes uninvited guests appear. Since it is a young falcon, it just chases them around and never catches them.
